Chompy's Adventure is a 3D platformer inspired by classics like Crash Bandicoot and Astro Bot. Players control Chompy, a courageous creature on a mission to retrieve stolen magical fruit and save his village. The game combines dynamic movement, vibrant environments, and a compelling narrative for an immersive experience.

Overview

​Chompy's Adventure is a vibrant 3D platformer where players control Chompy, a determined creature on a quest to retrieve a stolen magical fruit vital to his village's survival. The theft has caused the land to wither, threatening the villagers with starvation. To restore balance, Chompy must jorney through diverse, colorful environments, overcoming fast-paced platforming challenges, engaging in combat, and solving environmental puzzles to reclaim the fruit and save his home.

Project Design Goals

  • Develop a Playable Level
    Create a 3D platforming level that showcases core mechanics, including jumping, dashing, and spin attacks, while incorporating obstacles, collectibles, and enemies.
     

  • Demonstrate Level Design Skills
    Design environments that guide players intuitively, balancing linear paths with exploratory elements to enhance engagement.
     

  • Craft a Compelling Narrative
    Develop a storyline that motivates players, providing context and emotional investment in Chompy's quest to restore his village.
     

  • Showcase Technical Proficiency
    Use industry-standard tools and engines to effectively implement gameplay mechanics, AI behaviors, and environmental interactions.
     

  • Highlight Artistic Direction
    Establish a cohesive art style that reflects the game's tone, designing characters, environments, and UI elements that enhance the overall aesthetic.

Chompy’s Adventure started as a pre-production project focused on level design, gameplay mechanics, and environmental storytelling. My aim was to create a fun, polished 3D platforming experience inspired by classic 3D platformers like Crash Bandicoot and Astro Bot.

The level is designed to guide players naturally through challenging platforming sections, hidden collectibles, and interactive elements like breakable crates, bounce pads and moving platforms. Enemy placement and obstacles create a balanced difficulty curve, keeping gameplay engaging without feeling frustrating.

While this project is still in development, the focus has been on level flow, gameplay feel, and refining core mechanics before moving into full production. The sections below highlight key areas of design and implementation.

Game & Level Design

  • Level Layout and Environmental Challenges
    Crafted diverse, vibrant levels that guide players through platforming challenges, integrating moving platforms, environmental hazards, and hidden areas to encourage exploration and skillful navigation.​
     

  • Collectibles and Reward Systems
    Placed fruits, coins, and breakable crates strategically throughout levels to incentivize exploration and provide rewards, enhancing player engagement and progression.​
     

  • Combat and Enemy Encounters
    Designed enemy placements and behaviors to create engaging combat scenarios, requiring players to utilize Chompy's dash, jump, and spin attack abilities effectively.​
     

  • Visual and Artistic Direction
    Developed a vibrant, stylized art style inspired by titles like Crash Bandicoot and Astro’s Playroom, creating lush, colorful environments that blend natural and magical elements.​
     

  • User Interface Elements
    Designed minimalistic HUD elements, including health indicators and collectible counters, to provide essential information without cluttering the screen, maintaining an immersive experience.
