Game Jam - Broken

Use The Maximum Fix Nail Gun To Repair Your House!

Our class participated in weekly game jams, with our first being one themed 'Broken.' We were placed into random teams to help us learn how to collaborate effectively with different people.

Overview

For this Game Jam there were multiple theme options to choose from. Many centred around the concept of "broken," such as fractured, shattered, and similar ideas. After brainstorming and creating a mind map to explore potential themes, we decided to go with the theme "broken", which aligned well with a game idea that the entire team was excited about, named Maximum Fix.

Maximum Fix is a fast-paced game where you use the ultimate nail gun to quickly repair your home. Once you collect the nail gun, your goal is to fix every item in the house before time runs out.

Project Design Goals

  • Deliver a Themed Gameplay Experience
Design a game that reflects the “broken” theme in both mechanics and visual storytelling, focusing on a repair-based gameplay loop that aligns with the jam’s creative prompt.

  • Demonstrate Environmental and Object-Based Gameplay
Design an interactive home environment where objects transition between broken and repaired states, creating a satisfying and responsive gameplay flow for players under time pressure.

  • Design a Functional and Engaging Level Layout
Plan and construct the interior layout of the house to support intuitive player navigation, strategic placement of broken items, and effective pacing under the game’s timer constraint.

  • Showcase Technical Understanding
Apply efficient level design principles, ensuring player movement and interactions feel natural and rewarding within the confined space.

  • Emphasise Problem Solving and Adaptability
Design ideas quickly in response to time constraints, technical limitations, and ongoing team feedback during the jam’s tight development window.
